Stock up on cleaning supplies

You can’t clean if you don’t have anything to clean with! That’s why the first step to beginning your spring clean is stocking up on cleaning products. Go through your cupboards and look under your sink for your cleaning supplies, and take inventory. If you want to avoid harsh chemicals when you buy your missing products, going green is a great option. It’s good for the environment and is a healthy choice for your family. Not only that, but simple ingredients like white vinegar and baking soda are surprisingly versatile! Take a look at this guide to homemade all-natural cleaning recipes if you want to give it a try.

Make a list before you start

Once you have your cleaning supplies restocked, the next best thing to do is make a list of everything you want to get done. It’s up to you to decide how deep a clean your home needs, but whether you are looking for a comprehensive guide to help you clean every nook and cranny of your home or something shorter, designed to be accomplished over a day, a weekend, or two, having a list will be a big help. It makes finishing all your cleaning goals easier, since you won’t have to make decisions in the moment, wonder what to do next, or ask yourself what else you have to get done. Anytime you’re unsure all you’ll have to do is check your list and then focus on the task at hand. It’s also satisfying to be able to see how much you have left to finish. Plus, when you have a whole house to clean, even the little things can be nice rewards checking things off when you’ve completed them can be one of those little rewards along the way. We’ve put together a ready-made checklist for you to use, to help you get a headstart on your spring cleaning.

Declutter your closet first

Closet

Once you have a list to work off of, you need to decide what to do first. We recommend going through your closet and donating or throwing away all of those old items you don’t wear anymore. It’s also a great place to start the actual cleaning part of your spring clean. Get all of that laundry washed, clear out your closet, dig through your drawers. Leave no shirt unturned in your search for those sneaky garments that have been hanging around unworn and cluttering up your wardrobe. Get rid of anything that doesn’t fit you, anything out of style, and anything you just don’t love to wear anymore. You shouldn’t stop with just your winter wardrobe, either. Give your spring and summer clothes a critical look-over before you put your winter wear away and replace it with your warm weather wear.

Then, once you’re finished with your clothes, consider doing a more thorough purge of all that accumulated stuff you can live without. You’d be amazed how much cleaner your home will look once you clean out your garage, your junk drawer, and your basement. Throwing away old, useless things will also free up plenty of space for when you start to tidy up and find a home for the stuff that you really do love.

Take things room by room

Spring cleaning can seem like a monumental task, but if you take it room by room, keep working through your list, and pace yourself you’ll get through it. And you’ll feel great about your fresh, spring-clean home once you do!
