Kleinburg Hills: An Inspiring Past, A Welcome Future
In 1848, John Nicholas Kline built two mills on the land that would become the core of the village of Kleinburg. It is believed that the name of the village came from John N. Kline, whose mills served the local farming community, but the present spelling originated from the German words for “small mountain”.
Situated on the Humber River, Kleinburg developed like many riverside villages, and became a popular rest stop on the way to Toronto. The community continued to grow, with events like the binder twine festival happening annually, and the McMichael Canadian Art Gallery being founded to display works like those of the “Group of Seven”, a group of Canadian landscape painters who painted in the area.
It was Kleinburg’s beautiful hills and landscapes that inspired so many of the Group of Seven’s paintings, and no wonder. The area is absolutely beautiful, and the community of Kleinburg Hills reflects that.
